A gesture of kindness may not immediately change a family's circumstances, but it can remind them that they are not alone on a difficult journey. Five years after her diagnosis, Michelle Cao hopes to turn the support she received into action, bringing hope to more people and families facing cancer.

Through Difficult Days, Grateful for Today

According to her family, Michelle was diagnosed with ovarian cancer on June 25, 2021. After discovering a lump, her family took her to hospital straight away. The diagnosis brought profound worry and fear to the whole family.

What followed was a long series of tests, treatments and difficult nights. At a young age, Michelle endured the pain of treatment, along with fear and exhaustion. With care and support from medical staff, her family and those around her, she persevered, one step at a time, and completed her treatment.

Five years have now passed since that diagnosis. For Michelle and her family, this is a deeply meaningful milestone, one they cherish with gratitude. Looking back, they understand all the more how much patients and families facing cancer need support, understanding and companionship.

Passing on the Kindness She Received

Having experienced the struggles of a cancer journey herself, Michelle chose to take part in the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life. She hopes to contribute to cancer research and support for people affected by cancer.

Her decision comes from gratitude and concern for others. She wants patients and families who are still going through difficult times to feel the care of their community and find strength to keep moving forward.

May everyone facing hardship be met with kindness, and may every family doing its best to persevere find support and hope.
